Curb Mounted SkylightsSkylights make homes and even offices look good but most people find it very hard to install skylights for homes. What many people do not realize is that it is easier to install a skylight than to install another window in a house. Most of the skylights in the market come with a flashing system that seals off the roof well preventing any leakages when it rains. This article will guide you on how to install a curb skylight in your house and build a light well to direct the sunlight into a room without using a lot of effort. Basically, there are two types of skylight systems but the most common type is the curb skylight system. In this type of skylight, a curb is mounted on a frame and put in place to serve as the skylight. The curb skylight is usually raised to be above the plane of the roof and it can be set on a wooden frame, a curb or the curb can be an integral part of the skylight unit. You should have some measurements or the size that you want your skylight to be because it is custom made. After you have the size, you should first build a frame for the skylight before deciding to cut an opening on your roof. Once you have constructed the frame with the help of a handy man, you can now cut the opening on your roof which will be fitted with the skylight. Once you have cut the opening on your roof, you should fit the skylight frame properly on the opening and make sure that it fits perfectly. All this should be done on a sunny day in order to avoid rain leaking through and the installation of the skylight is not complete. The curb mounted skylights can be glazed using glass or even a clear acrylic dome. Both of them can work just fine in letting light through to the room. You may use normal glass or insulating glass to glaze the skylight, whichever way you may prefer or fill it will suit your needs. You may to use insulating glass because it is one material that is top of the class in skylight glazing and may have it has argon gas fill and low emissivity coatings for an added energy efficiency. The flashing system used on a curb mounted skylight usually consists of a sill flashing, a head flashing and two pieces of side flashing that are fitted to suit the length of the skylight. The flashings installed on the sides are slipped under the shingles and the head flashings on the side of the unit. The sill flashings are set over the shingles just below the skylight but go under the side flashings. This configuration helps in directing rain water around and off the skylight and this prevents the skylight from leaking. The skylight can be opened to allow fresh air into a room but should b closed before darkness sets in because some creatures may sneak into a house through the skylight. Skylights have very many benefits and they provide fresh air and light to a room. Latest Skylighting Articles:
